When the major source of pollution is not industrial, most wastewater is termed "municipal".

It includes,

• small communities or sites of activities: hotels, restaurants, camping's, entertainment parks, isolated houses, …

Municipal wastewater treatment is principally based on biological methods. Various micro-organisms living in natural waters can feed on an amazing variety of dissolved and suspended organic compounds. When there living conditions are not more meet, there action are slowed down. A biological wastewater treatment plant create the best living conditions for these micro-organisms to optimise the elimination of many pollutants.

The most important sources of fresh water in Europe are surface water and ground water. The portion of rain and melting snow collected in ponds, lakes, creeks and rivers is termed " surface water ". The portion of rain and snow soaked into the ground is termed " ground water ".

These waters carry many impurities : solubilized minerals, particles, organic material (dissolved or in suspension), dissolved gazes. Many of those impurities are not compatible with the use of those waters for drinking purposes. The variables of impurities are influenced by the source from which the water is taken. The means of treatment must be chosen case by case.
